Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
