El Kaabi's Spectacular Finish Wraps Up Morocco's Victory Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opener.
Host nation Morocco shook off a anxious beginning to overcome their island opponents in the tournament's inaugural fixture on Sunday, thanks to Brahim Díaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.
This constituted a less than dominant performance, however, from the highly fancied Moroccans, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and had to work tirelessly for the points in rainy conditions at Rabat's national stadium.
Nervy Start and Missed Chances
Morocco failed to convert an first-half penalty and were goalless at the interval despite dominating possession, eventually opening the scoring in the 55th minute.
It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before laying it across for Díaz to sidefoot into the net.
Every opening game is invariably tough but we delivered in the second period,” commented manager Walid Regragui.
El Kaabi's Piece of Magic
Any lingering nerves was subsequently extinguished by a piece of sheer genius from substitute El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes after coming on, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken the lead in the 11th minute when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Díaz. Yet, Rahimi's effort was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Late Chance
Comoros comfortably held their more illustrious opponents for long periods before the Moroccans' greater quality eventually told.
Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the score as the match wore on, even though Comoros created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly after the first goal, with Saïd shooting straight at Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.
Injury Concern for Hosts
The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to the skipper, Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute in tears.
The centre-back had just made his comeback to the international setup last month after a year’s absence caused by ankle surgery.
The win extends Morocco's record-breaking run of consecutive victories to 19, surpassing the old record of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
