{'It’s like they’ve erupted out of someone’s subconscious': the way horror has come to dominate contemporary film venues.

The biggest jump-scare the movie business has experienced in 2025? The return of horror as a leading genre at the British cinemas.

As a category, it has impressively surpassed previous years with a 22% rise compared to last year for the British and Irish cinemas: £83,766,086 in 2025, versus £68 million the previous year.

“Previously, zero horror films made £10 million in the UK or Ireland. Currently, five have surpassed that mark,” comments a film industry analyst.

The big hits of the year – Weapons (£11.4 million), another hit film (£16.2 million), the latest Conjuring installment (£14.98 million) and 28 Years Later (£15.54m) – have all stayed in the theaters and in the popular awareness.

Even though much of the professional discussion centers on the singular brilliance of prominent auteurs, their achievements suggest something changing between moviegoers and the category.

“Many have expressed, ‘You should watch this even if horror isn’t your thing,’” explains a film distribution executive.

“Films like these play with genre and structure to create something completely different, and that speaks to an audience in a different way.”

But apart from artistic merit, the ongoing appeal of horror movies this year indicates they are giving audiences something that’s highly necessary: therapeutic relief.

“Currently, cinema mirrors the widespread anger, fear, and societal splits,” says a film commentator.

“The genre masterfully exploits common anxieties, magnifying them so that everyday stresses fade beside the cinematic horror,” says a respected writer of horror film history.

Against a current events featuring conflict, immigration issues, political shifts, and climate concerns, supernatural beings and undead creatures resonate a bit differently with filmg oers.

“I read somewhere that the success of vampire movies is linked to economically depressed times,” states an performer from a recent horror hit.

“The concept reflects how economic systems can drain vitality from individuals.”

Since the early days of cinema, social unrest has influenced the genre.

Experts highlight the rise of European artistic movements after the WWI and the chaotic atmosphere of the post-war Germany, with features such as early expressionist works and Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

Later occurred the 1930s depression and classic monster movies.

“Take Dracula: it depicts an Eastern European figure invading Britain, spreading a metaphorical infection that endangers local protagonists,” says a commentator.

“Therefore, it embodies concerns related to foreign influx.”

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari from 1920 reflected social unrest following the first world war.

The specter of border issues shaped the just-premiered folk horror a recent film title.

Its writer-director elaborates: “I wanted to explore ideas around the rise of populism. Firstly, slogans like ‘Let’s Make Britain Great Again’, that harken back to some fantasy time when things were ‘better’, but only if you were a rich white man.”

“Secondly, the idea that you could be with someone you know and then suddenly they blurt out something round the dinner table or in a Facebook post and you’re like, ‘Where did that come from?’”

Maybe, the current era of praised, culturally aware scary films began with a sharp parody released a year after a polarizing administration.

It sparked a fresh generation of innovative filmmakers, including several notable names.

“Those years were remarkably vibrant,” recalls a creator whose film about a murderous foetus was one of the period's key works.

“I believe it initiated a trend toward eccentric, high-concept horror that aimed for artistic recognition.”

The same filmmaker, who is writing a new horror original, adds: “In the last ten years, public taste has evolved to welcome bolder horror concepts.”

An influential satire from 2017 launched modern horror with social commentary.

At the same time, there has been a reconsideration of the overlooked scary films.

Recently, a independent theater opened in London, showing cult classics such as a quirky horror title, The Fall of the House of Usher and the modern reinterpretation of Dr Caligari.

The re-appreciation of this “gritty and loud” genre is, according to the theater owner, a direct reaction to the formulaic productions churned out at the cinemas.

“It counters the polished content from big producers. The industry has become blander and more foreseeable. Numerous blockbusters share the same traits,” he explains.

“On the other hand, [these indie works] feel imperfect. They seem to burst forth from deep creativity, free from commercial constraints.”

Scary movies continue to upset the establishment.

“They have this strange ability to seem old fashioned and up to the minute, both at the same time,” notes an authority.

In addition to the re-emergence of the mad scientist trope – with several renditions of a well-known story on the horizon – he predicts we will see fright features in the coming years responding to our modern concerns: about artificial intelligence control in the near future and “monstrous metaphors in power structures”.

At the same time, a religious-themed scare film a forthcoming title – which narrates the tale of biblical parent hardships after the nativity, and features famous performers as the divine couple – is planned for launch later this year, and will definitely create waves through the faith-based groups in the America.</
