Peak Pizza? Domino's Leader Exits Following Shift Into Chicken.
A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been replaced after tensions with its board.
Leadership Shake-Up
Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in the top role, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's looks for a long-term chief.
Rennie, who was with Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to shift Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.
Governance Disagreements
It is understood that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his focus and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Brand Introduction
In September, Domino's launched its poultry brand – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Leadership Statement
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, stated: “Directors think that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and profitability in our primary operations. We are prioritizing identifying the suitable leader to direct the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Market Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it warned that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in interim earnings.
Rival chains are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the closure of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets faced financial collapse.
Wellness Efforts
Adapting to market shifts towards better nutrition, Domino's has launched lower-calorie products, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
Frampton stated: “We have a several ongoing development and operational projects that we will be concentrating on carrying out at pace.”
She said these comprised ongoing development on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also without a full-time CFO until the spring, when Andrea joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow is acting financial officer.
