The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Incarcerated
The ex-president of France plans a memoir in the coming weeks titled Diary of a Prisoner, detailing his experience spent in jail.
This news was made shortly after Sarkozy was released while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to obtain presidential race money linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.
Time in Custody: Personal Reflections
“In prison there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he writes in one passage, suggesting the account centers around his reflections during seclusion as opposed to extensive analysis on the strained and struggling jail system in France.
“Quiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where one hears endless commotion,” he adds. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”
Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship
At his release request hearing, the former leader was present remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, easing this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”
“It never crossed my mind that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It affects one all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”
First of Its Kind
The former president, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to serve time in prison.
Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.
Books in Prison
It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the texts he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated but escapes to seek vengeance.
Daily Reality
He was placed in isolation for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at La Santé prison in Paris. Guards were stationed in an adjacent room.
Reports indicated that he had eaten solely dairy snacks during his stay because he feared prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.
Defense Viewpoint
The legal representative, who saw him regularly each day throughout the jail term, informed the court he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “He received death threats, has heard screaming after dark and emergency responses next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”
Case Background
His incarceration began in late October when the judiciary sentenced him to a half-decade term for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.
He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial planned for next spring.
