The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
